The necromancer is an excellent class for PvE.
If you're only running a MM, you're wasting half its power.
The curses line has some very powerful skills - Spiteful Spirit is always a nice elite to carry and Mark of Pain can cause some serious damage to a mob (especially if you have MM hero with you).
The blood line however has little to offer apart from party support, but you'll be wanting to run some organised team builds for that.

Yup, Spiteful spirit is a must have. Mark of pain, weaken armor Insidious parasite ( can be a nice heal as well as damage dealer). The possibilities are endless.
Check out the Guru forum on Necromancers. It contains a wealth of info and builds.

Spiteful Spirit is the best elite for a necro pve. Nothing compares to its damage. + The curses line is great.

Shame on you all,Everyone forgot Enfeebling Blood,Barbs,Rigor Mortis,Reckless Haste. Some of the most potent skills in the curses line
@Luminaris: Wrong. It's not the best,it's the elite most asked for in groups/pugs.In terms of general use (especially in HM) it's meh

Well forgive me for not mentioning everything. :P
Plenty of things compare to and surpass SS in terms of damage, it's just that SS is a nice, easy to use elite to carry around.
I myself have recently started using a Discord team build and am completely hooked. Of course, I still have plenty of curses with me (Mark of Pain is so useful).
Someone's already pointed to www.pvxwiki.com - it does have some useful stuff but don't be fooled into thinking stuff there is always optimised or the best option. Try to find synergies between skills.
An example is SS + Reckless Haste, yet I often see people with SS and Faintheartedness, which is a counter-productive combination as the latter reduces the effectiveness of the former.

Assassin's Promise is the best elite for a necro in PvE.

That is true, the damage is decent but it relies on too many factors to be worth it.
Basically any sort of kiting or knockdown(really any event that stops the hexed foe attacking) is a waste. But yet, nothing is guaranteed in PvE
For the average player its fine,it will work a charm, but anything higher inc HM I personally start to look elsewhere for more beneficial elites. *cough* Assassin's Promise *cough*

AP + Rigor Mortis + Mark of Pain + Ebon Sin Support = Mob explosion
A lot of the time you don't even need to bother with Rigor Mortis.
Either that or throw AP and You Move like a Dwarf and tell your heroes to spam Discord until the thing dies (which won't take long).

Listen to this guy, he knows what he's talking about.
Assassin's Promise is the best elite for a necro in PvE. And SS is garbage. Go go discord spam.

qft. not to make things one-track for pve.. but.. yea there are few areas out there that a discord team can't kill with ease.
SS is okay in normal, go ahead and use it if that's where you are. Lets not make the game too boring now

SS is ok in HM, just not optimal. I vanquished most of Factions* with an SS curses build. Just remember to pack things like Mark of Pain and Enfeebling Blood and you'll be fine most of the time. A hero MB really helps take off the pressure and synergises brilliantly with MoP.
Assassin's Promise surpasses it however, if you use it correctly (which isn't difficult).
*Alright, Factions is easy to vanquish, but still...

is there anything else you can use beside SS, i've been thinking of starting a necro but since SS is like optimal for pve there doenst seem to be any other pve worthy elites. I've been playing a ele for the past year its quite fun, but its nice to switch it up. I alternate between Searing flames savannah heat and unsteady ground (somtime i use double attunes) builds, so it wont get too boring spamming the same damn spells all the time. the question i have, is the necromancer versatile enough to be able to use several different kinds of builds in pve?

[Assassin's Promise] is very useful. Use that to recharge [Mark of Pain] and let your physicals tear mobs apart.
[Discord] has uses, but heroes tend to be used to spam it with someone using [Assassin's Promise] to fuel condition skills.
[Blood is Power] is a very useful support skill for the elite areas.
[Order of the Vampire] can also be used, but the other orders; [Order of Pain] and [Dark Fury] are usually better.
You also have other support options, a N/Rt can use Soul Reaping to power rit heals.
[Spiteful Spirit] is nice, but nowhere near the best option.

thanks for tips, i like the blood is power one, might be good for the monks (i usually play alone) i can also see the vampire order being good with a melee party. Discord looks ok, but what would be a good bar for that one?

For discord, people tend to run a team setup (which is very effective). www.pvxwiki.com provides a good start point, but it's not necessarily optimised.
Run a build suitable for the area. [Blood is Power] isn't recommended for general use, but is useful in the elite areas (Underworld, The Deep etc).
Experiment a bit and find builds right for you.

imo Heros make better MMs then humans, their ability to spam death nova is unmatched.
when i play me necro, i try to stay away from SS, just to make it fun. It all depends on what area i am playing. Icy veins is fun to spam.
